I can`t live without reading. I do appreciate reading, it is a great pleasure for me, more valuable than movies. Written words cause that many images, dreams, thoughts, ideas. I lose all sense of time?
I tried to read in French and in English many times. But it was boring; I felt that it was just a kind of assignment. Something for studying, not for life. It was a deal with myself: well, we have 10 pages in English / French and then we will enjoy our book in Russian ;)

At last! Yesterday I bought MY FIRST ENGLISH BOOK.
It is the 'Winnie-the-Pooh', 4 books in a pretty box. I`m amazed how finely and skillfully Russian animated cartoon has been made. It seems that Leonov's voice could say something like 'You didn`t exactly miss but you missed the balloon.' And I found an absolute truth: Some have brains, some have not (I suspected that!).
Actually I`m going to spend this night with my First English Book.

And what was your First English Book?

It`s difficult to name my first English book `cause I started reading several books and unfortunately didn`t finish a single one. My first books were The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Client by John Grisham and several more which I even can`t remember. And now I`m reading The Economic Naturalist by Robert H Frank. I think that this is going to be my first book that I`m really looking forward to finish. As I already said that I never got to finale with English books.

This book explains economics in a completely different way. You will get to know what cost benefit principle is and you will get an answer from explanation of such questions as Why do women`s clothes always button from the left, while men`s clothes always button from the right?, Why do milk sold in rectangular containers, while soft drinks are sold in cylindrical ones?, Why do brown eggs cost more than white ones?, Why is there a light in your fridge but not in your freezer?, Why do 24-hour shops bother having locks on their doors? The answer is simple: economics.

Economics doesn`t just happen in classrooms or international banks. It is everywhere and influence everything we do and see, from the cinema screen to the streets. It can even explain some of life`s most intriguing enigmas.

For years, economist Robert Frank has been encouraging his students to use economics to explain the strange situations they encounter in everyday life, from peculiar product design to the vagaries of sex appeal. Now he shares the most intriguing and bizarre questions and the economic principles that answer them to reveal why many of the most puzzling parts of everyday life actually make perfect (economic) sense. And authors students helped him write this fantastic book with their essays. Learning economics is like learning to speak a new language. It`s important to start slowly and see each idea in multiple contexts.

Totally recommended to those who want to understand economics as a whole. You will spend a full of fun and useful time during reading.

My first English book was Three Men in a Boat. I enjoyed it very much. I remember how I laughed out loud in places. Then there were other books as well the stories about Sherlock Holmes and some of Conan Doyles novels; White Fang and Martin Eden; Alice in Wonderland, Jane Eyre. And, after watching the unforgettable Lithuanian movie Rich Man, Poor Man (I always get shivers up my spine when I listen to America The Beautiful which is played during the end titles) it was impossible not to read the book.

I think its important to start reading books in English with the one you are really interested in. In that case it wont be something for studying, not for life, as Shaos reasonably pointed out.

Now, unfortunately, I have no time to read at all :( , but soon Ill have a vacation and I think of reading something of Sir Walter Scott whose books I read before in Russian only.

My first English book was What Katy did ,What Katy Did at school & What Katy did next by Susan Coolidge. It's an amasing story about a rebellious American girl who put up a desperate and heroic struggle against her serious and lingering disease and who could cope with all her problems thanks to her willpower and her will to live. Being a disabled person( she had broken her back in the age of thirteen) she was forced to stay in bed for six or seven years. But it didn't turn out a serious obstacle for her further mental. physical and spiritual development. She kept smiling through her pain, remaining kind, optimistical, gladdening everybody with a good mood and brillliant sence of humor. This book and its character helped me in a hard period of my life when like Katy I was struggling hard against my disease. Read books: they discover a new world and even help to overcome the difficulties.

My first English book was the Picture of Dorian Gray. It was my first book which I read in the original without any adaptation made to simplify the reading. I read it when I was a freshman at the university. We choose the book for our home reading classes or for our individual reading assignment. Frankly speaking I do not remember that well.
I remember that I could not understand how it was possible to read books in English when my classmate did it at school instead of doing some exercises or following a teacher.
Now i do it myself. And I don't see any problems with it. I like reading in English. I enjoy it. I guess I can't live without reading some book in English. I need to read all the time. I do it at home, in public transport, at school. It really gives me enjoyment. A good book in English really makes me happy. I enjoy reading English because even perfect translation without any flaws is no better than an original book. It can't express completely the thoughts of an author (but thoughts and interpretation of the translator as well), convey the atmosphere, give all the details and shades which a book in the original can do.
I regularly buy books in English because I like reading printed books rather than ebooks (even if I print them out).
Last winter (in January) when I was in Moscow I bought several books and spent around 2,000 roubles on them. To be honest not all of them were in English )). And I decided that it would enough for one year and that I would not buy books any more this year. But I broke my promise in March (as far as I remember). I could not resist the temptation to buy some more books. Furthermore I ordered them on-line because I could not find the desirable books in my native city. I've bought even more books since then.
I think that reading in the original is not only a pleasant thing to do but it also a good means for improving language, it's a good source of new words (especially contemporary books), a way to get to know the other culture, it gives an idea of informal language, of some realias, maybe even events and tendencies, etc.

Hi and thanks so much for your note. I have this book sitting on my daughter's must-read bookshelf, but I did not consider reading it myself. Now, once I finish my beloved "Breaking Down" I know what to read next. Thank you!
